Picture Pages

All of the pictures on this site which look like as if they were on high-definition plasma TVs, can be accessed by browsing through the Plant Picture list. This is a list of all of the plant pictures on the server, grouped by Genus. Clicking on a particular Genus will list all of the species for which pictures are available, and clicking on a species will show all a mosaic of all of the pictures of that species that are available. This is fine if you know the genus or species that you are looking for, is impractical if you need to browse through pictures of different plants.

Index Search

The above list of pictures is regularly indexed. This index can be searched by typing a full word or words into the [Picture Search] box below, and clicking on Picture Search. This will return a list of all of the pages on which the words are mentioned.

The conventions used are:

  • Each species is in a separate directory
  • Each subspecies is in a separate directory on the same level as the species
  • All pictures of flowers that have been disected contain the words "naked" or "section" in the title
  • The descriptions next to the flowers refer to the specific specimen, not the species in general. eg Flowering time.
  • When searching for the following words, use the singlar form indicated, not the plural.
    • leaf not leaves
    • bud not buds
    • anther not anthers
    • ovary not ovaries
    • flower not flowers
    • plant not plants

Search Database

This site also has a searchable database of many plant names linked to characteristics. Although the database behind the page is fast, the page itself takes a long time to download, as it contains lists of all of the families, genuses and species of plants in the database. This may make your life easier, but be warned, it can be a little slow. Untick the Show FGS checkbox to speed things up.

Use the Family, Genus and Species drop down boxes to select the list of plants displayed in the results page.

Use "Lines per page" to govern how many results are displayed, and use [Begin],[Prev] and [Next] to move through the selected list.

If a picture of the plant in the result list is available, the word "[Picture]" will appear on the right of the screen where a picture is available. Clicking on this will take you to the pictures in the Picture Pages. If the "Show pictures" box is ticked, the word "[Picture]" is replaced by a thumbnail of the plant.
