FIELD NOTES / SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa: online betting and casino rules

The National Gambling Board distinguishes licensed online bookmaking from prohibited online casino-style gambling.

Start with the regulator

The NGB's enforcement guidance states that online gambling is prohibited except online betting through bookmakers licensed in South Africa. Its FAQ also states that South Africans cannot gamble with international companies from within the Republic. A foreign licence, a rand balance or a working website does not establish South African authorisation.

Verify the legal entity

Match a brand's stated operating company and licence to the relevant provincial board and the NGB verified-operators register. A corporate registration and a bookmaker licence are different things. Brand names and company names may differ. Check the permitted activity as well as the name.

Treat casino labels carefully

A website may market products with casino terminology. That marketing does not settle the legal classification or prove that a bookmaker licence authorises every product. Consult the regulator's current guidance for the product and province concerned. Our offshore directory is a research resource and does not certify local permission.
